Richard Branson Rides Out Hurricane Irma On His Private Island

September 6, 2017

Billionaire Richard Branson has chosen to stay on Necker, his private Caribbean island, even though Hurricane Irma is baring down with category 5 winds. He and members of his staff holed up in a concrete wine cellar to ride out the storm.

“On Necker Island we have constructed really strong buildings (with hurricane blinds) that should be able to handle extreme weather pretty well, though with a Category 5 hurricane almost nothing can withstand it,” Branson tweeted. “The atmosphere is eerie but beautiful.”

Branson bought Necker Island in 1980 and has experienced three hurricanes there already, though Hurricane Irma has the potential to be the strongest storm the Atlantic has ever seen.
