Rita Wilson Undergoes Double Mastectomy Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis

April 16, 2015

Rita Wilson revealed in a statement to Us Weekly earlier this week that she recently underwent a double mastectomy after receiving a devastating breast cancer diagnosis.

“Last week, with my husband [Tom Hanks] by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma,” Wilson told the mag in a statement. “I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”

According to Wilson, her original doctor found her to be free of cancer at her latest yearly screening, but at the urging of a close friend, she got a second opinion and the harmful cells were found.
